“This limited series has a very character-driven story which is exactly why there’s enough for six episodes (…) This also results in very non-linear storytelling, but it never gets confusing (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)”– Karina Adelgaard: Heaven of Horror

Thursday’s Widows: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?
Opening Shot: It is “Thursday, December 26.” Either in or around a pool, we overhear voices urgently communicating with one another. Two teenagers record video of what’s happening on one of their phones while hiding behind a tree.
The Gist: The teenagers have no idea what the three men are doing, and they are acting strangely. The lights suddenly go out, there’s a commotion, and we hear a zap. Suddenly, the men are floating motionless in the sea.
“When your life is fantastic, you’ll go to any lengths to keep it that way. In a journal entry, Mavi Guevara (Cassandra Ciangherotti) states, “I’m the only one who can tell them the truth. “Because I am an expert,”
Los Altos de las Cascadas is a country club neighborhood where Mavi both resides and works as a real estate agent. She sells a house to Gustavo Maldonado (Alfonso Bassave), a Spaniard who wants to buy it as a “surprise” for his wife Carla (Sofa Sisniega), a few months prior to this incident. The community assembly, which is made up of other neighbors and includes Mavi’s pals Teresa Scaglia (Irene Azuela), Mariana Andrade (Zuria Vega), Lala de la Luna (Mayra Hermosillo), and Dorita Ramos (Elena López Fernandez), must give their consent before he can move further.
Since they adopted Ramona (Sasha Gonzalez) when she was six years old, Mariana and her husband Ernesto (Gerardo Trejoluna) are constantly trying to improve the way she looks. Mariana wants the girl to dress appropriately for her position, but she now only wears a t-shirt and Doc Martins. After leaving the political party that his grandfather founded, Lala’s husband Martin (Pablo Cruz Guerrero) is pleading with Teresa’s wealthy husband Tano (Omar Chaparro) for financial support in order to run for governor. After leaving a demanding job, Mavi’s spouse Roni (Juan Pablo Medina) now cultivates marijuana. Mavi lusts after the security officer that passes by her real estate agency because she is so horrified by her husband’s predicament.
While everything is going on, Ramona and Juandi, Mavi and Roni’s son (Diego Bernal), sneak around the neighborhood at night to record some very weird activities that residents believe are taking place in private.
The women get together every Thursday to chat, drink, and watch their husbands play dominoes. Carla learns from Mavi that the group is now referred to as “Thursday’s Widows.” Tano challenges Gus, the new guy, to smash his inexpensive watch and choose one of the pricey watches that Tano acquires as the men play dominoes.
The challenge is presented to the four husbands on December 26 when bubbles are being blown throughout the pool area. Tano challenges the men to put a gun in their mouths and pull the trigger. Roni eventually storms off since she doesn’t want to participate in Tano’s insane games. However, as the lights go off, the three other men start swimming around in the pool and get shocked. Roni, who is leaning against the balcony railing, trips and suffers serious injuries.
What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Thursday’s Widows (Original title: Las viudas de los jueves) is based on a novel and a 2009 Argentinian film The Widows Of Thursdays, but the series also has the feel of a potboiler like Desperate Housewives.
Our Take: The premise of this Thursday’s episode of Widows is that Mavi, a successful real estate agent who prides herself on being extremely perceptive, will divulge all of the information she has on the families in her gated country club neighborhood after the incident that resulted in the deaths of Tano, Gus, and Martin. A flashback will be included in each episode to reveal the secrets of each family, mysteries that may have contributed to the three men’s electrocution in that pool. On the other hand, we are dubious of whether we care.
Yes, we enjoy seeing the woes of the wealthy. It’s the reason popular television programs like The White Lotus exist; in fact, we’re not sure whether executive producer Mariana Aceves wasn’t motivated to revisit and develop this narrative as a result of the success of that program. However, like the majority of shows in this category, the writers must develop their characters such that we might truly want to watch them and feel their very real issues. That is simply not evident here.
Here, nobody resembles “the good guy” in the slightest. Even Mavi, the main character of the show, who takes it upon herself to expose everyone’s secrets, has her own secrets that she needs to keep hidden because she is dissatisfied that her husband does not share the community’s other men’s high-pressure career ambitions.
When Mariana tells Ramona to stop dressing like the help and counts to 10 when she gives her daughter what she believes to be an obligatory hug, some of the things that people say in the first episode just appear ludicrous. Tano dislikes magicians, so Teresa brings one to his birthday party as payback for Tano canceling their private cruise. She receives an angry-fuck from him on the tennis courts in return.
The males are slain in the actual incident that occurred on Thursday. There are events that take place that we are not shown since they will be disclosed in bits and pieces as the series progresses. We don’t like manipulative techniques like that, where everything would be clear if we simply saw one or two photos that are being withheld. Some bizarre events appear to occur, and the fact that we are not shown them drives us mad. Given that none of the characters we’ve met so far are either likeable or even vaguely fascinating, it doesn’t exactly make us want to stick around to see the jigsaw pieces fall into place.
Sex and Skin: We already mentioned the anger-fucking, and Teresa witnesses Mavi screwing the security guard in her office. We’re sure there will be more as the show progresses.
Parting Shot: We see Teresa’s shocked face as she discovers the bodies. Mavi says in voice over, “Teresa Scaglia, I’ll start with you. The truth must be known.”
Sleeper Star: The only character we remotely want to see more of is Ramona, played by Sasha Gonzalez, mainly because her mother’s desire to make her into something she’s not is something a lot of people can relate to.
Most Pilot-y Line: There’s a scene where Ramona and Juandi observe a neighbor getting his privates licked by, well, we won’t spoil it here, but we had to rewind it to actually confirm what we saw was what we saw. And it even though much of it is implied, it’s still pretty gratuitous.
Our Call: SKIP IT. Given how horrible everyone on Thursday’s Widows is, we might have reached the point when we get tired of seeing wealthy people behave badly.
